Fish SurfboardsThe true fish surfboard first came to light in the early 60s when people got sick of lugging ten foot mals around and started standing up on kneeboards! Now days the term “fish” is quite widely used and covers a large range of surfboards. Traditionally the fish is a short 5’5” twin fin, fat and thick with little or no tail rocker at all. The original board was well documented and built by Steve Liss. The board had little nose rocker and a very straight rail line that worked best in small long peeling waves. The modern or hybrid fish is a lot different. It still has less rocker than a standard board, but a lot in comparison to the Steve Liss model, and has quite a lot of rail curve. It is designed to surf like a short board in small sloppy waves. Recently Derek Hynd approached me with two new models he wished to produce - a 5'3" micro wing fish with a 10½" tail, and a 5'8" fish with a 13" tail and no wing. The micro wing fish can be made up to 6'2" whilst the other made up to 6'. These boards are best suited to down-the-line waves and should be ridden 2-4" shorter than your height.
